much for being here. >> good afternoon. my name is josh vining, community organizer with the mission sro collaborative. i want to give a big thank you to the mdc for inviting us here today and sharing the work that we have been working on for quite a while. it's exciting. some of what we learned in the report is not shocking or no new news. but we do have a report based on a survey of over 150 sro tenant citywide who are either seniors or people with disabilities. who want to share a little bit about the results of the survey and the recommendations that came out as well. as far as sros go, i want to do an overview about what they are. we learned little bit from joanna earlier. typically, an sro is an 8x10 size room with a sink. some are smaller; some larger. by and large they don't have any cooking facilities in the building. some do have them on one per floor, shared kitche. there are a few hotels that have individual bathrooms. the majority of them are shared on the floor down the hall. we have always i've been at the mission sro for over 5 years, always large percent a
of the solutions that they have come up to make this process work better. my name is josh vining. i'm a community organization with the sro collaborative at dolores street services. dolores street and the sro collaborative realized that tenants were confused and that landlords were confused and people weren't quite sure what their responsibilities were and their role in getting rid of bedbug infestations. so we started to meet in the mission just to start of make that clear who was responsible for. what and we started to identify some gaps that were in the system. and when we looked at what was happening in other parts of city and talked to some of our other community advocate groups we found there was confusion there as well. so to identify some of the gaps that this were and to see what sort of recommendations we could put forth as suggestions for city policy. and sense then we have been working closely with the department of public health and have been giving sort of our suggestions on how they could -- sort of our suggestions on how they can incorporate some of the ideas no their own poli
on item no. 5? >> good morning, commissioners, my name is josh vining, i'm an organizor with the mission street collaborative. i wanted to say thanks for taking the time to talk about these issues. they sound like very commonsense issues but once we get into the issues it becomes more complicated. i wanted to step back and talk about the survey we conducted in 2011 and some of the responses we got from that. we surveyed 151 seniors or people with disabilities who lived in sro's city-wide and 68 percent of them were tenants who lived in nonprofit sro's, which are more likely to have these grab bars already installed than their private counterparts but even with that, we found less than 40 percent of tenants indicated they currently have grab bars, which is not nearly enough considering that many of the private buildings we had issues with barriers and even getting in. we expect that number city-wide to be a lot higher. i also just wanted to say about tenants. i did outreach on a weekly basis and i hear from tenants all the time that they are afraid of slipping and falling in the show
